Area: In the common toponomastics, the origin's name Calci comes from the Latin word «calx, calcis», that is to say «lime», which was to be found in the stonecaves along the feet of the mountains. The village rose in the middle of a valley that constitutes the will-be-named «La Valle Graziosa» during the centuries. It spread out with cottages, baileys, hermitages, monasteries, churches among olive groves and chestnut woods. During the Dark Ages, Calci was an agricultural and industrial village by the sides of the Zambra stream. It was overlooked by the castle of the Pisan Bishop, who was the feudal lord of the valley. Olive-growing provided pure oil and the Zambra stream gave power to the water-mills.
