Area: San Rossore Estate covers an area of 4800 ha and is the most important natural environment within the Migliorino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Regional Park. It is bounded by the river Serchio, the city of Pisa, the river Arno and the Ligurian Sea. The name of the estate originates from the lexical deformation of Lussorio, a Christian martyr killed in Sardinia under Diocletian: his body is buried since 1080 in Pisa. The estate of San Rossore is the most significant remains of the "Selva Palatina", a forest that until the Middle Ages stretched along the Tuscan coast between the river Magra to the present south coast of the province of Pisa. San Rossore is one of the most impressive and preserved natural sites in Italy, with a third of the surface covered by woods where there are poplar, alder, ash, leccio and pine trees. There are also dunes and marshland areas, where there is a rare flora like drosera, osmunda and pink hibiscus. Wildlife includes a rich variety of birds, including: royal jelly, brown heron, white heron, garzetta, waders, ducks and cormorants. In the woods it is easy to meet the species of green and red woodpecker. There are also deers, wild boars, wild bunnies and red foxes.
