Between Lucca and Pistoia the country is quite flat up to the Monte Albano and to the Medio Valdarno: this area was a marshland until it was reclaimed during the 18th Century by Pietro Leopoldo, duke of Tuscany. But if you drive north you will find a countryside with a much more rugged mountain feel to it; from here , if you go east you get to the MUGELLO area, and to the VAL DI SIEVE, that includes the final section of the river Sieve.
