Livorno: this city is situated on the Tyrrhenian coast at the southern edge of the Arno plain and is an important commercial and industrial centre and port. It was founded on a former auxiliary Pisan port between 1576 and the early 17th century, on the orders of the Medici family,: they made it the main Tuscan outlet to the sea. Today the town has a modern layout but the ancient Fortezza Vecchia (16th century), can still be visited. Following the coastal road, direction south, one can stop at the Sanctuary of Montenero, which foundation is tying to a miraculous event: the recovery in the 1345 with the Ardenza river of an image of the Virgo on behalf of a shepherd, to which was commanded to bring the icon to the mountain and the place where is become too heavy to be subsequently transported. The precious image, attributed to the Pisan painter James of Michael said the Gera, was guarded at first from Augustinian hermits, to then be definitely systematised in the church from the XV century. Travelling along the old Aurelia road, you will note a short road lined with cypress. It is the old country road from San Guido, on the main road along the coast from Livorno to Grosseto, goes inland to the village of Bolgheri and is lined with cypress. It was made famous by the great poet : Giosue Carducci.
