Grosseto
Grosseto: Capital of Southern Tuscany's Maremma, the coastal marshland region that includes Monte Argentario, the centre of Grosseto is enclosed by hexagonal city walls built in the 16th century by Cosimo di Medici to defeat the area against the Saracen and the Spanish soldiers. Six hexagonal bastions still enclose today city lanes and gardens. In addition to the medieval fortifications, the walls also contain the imposing Medici Fortress, dominated by the impressive Sienese guardhouse from the 1300s. We suggest to visit the church of S. Francesco (13th century, Gothic façade, inside a Cross painted by Duccio di Buoninsegna) and the Duomo (13th-14th century). From Grosseto one can easily reach beautiful spots and mediaeval hamlets Manciano, Pitigliano, Sorano, Saturnia and Montemerano.
