Arezzo

Arezzo: Arezzo was founded by the Etruscan and called Aretium. The most representative work of the etruscan period is the Chimera, a bronze statuette of the Vth century B.C. which has become the symbol of the town, which was built on top of a hill surrounded by 4 valleys: the Valdarno, Valdichiana, Valle del Casentino and the Valtiberina. We suggest to see the mediaeval town centre and pay a visit also to the Piero della Francesca's famous fresco cycle depicting the Legend of the Cross. Around Arezzo there are other important mediaeval hamlets and monasteries like La Verna, where St. Francis spent the last years of his life and received his Stigmata in 1224, and Camaldoli, founded by the hermit Saint Romualdo in 1012. In the Valdichiana area there is Cortona, built on a spur of the Monte Sant'Egidio. The town is surrounded by powerful wails, smoothed down by centuries and winds, along which the ancient gates open in correspondence to the roads coming up from the valley. In this area there is also more: Lucignano, Monte San Savino, Gargonza, Pienza Montepulciano, where the well-known Brunello di Montalcino is produced, while in the Valtiberina, where the river Tevere grows, and where Michelangelo was born, there are the mediaeval villages of Monterchi, Anghiari and Sansepolcro.
